EARTH HOUR. WE SEEK FOR COMPREHENSIVE SUSTAINABILITY
In the occasion of earth hour, we would like to express the importance of raising awareness for companies and motivate them to work on sustainable activities and actions that will benefit us as a society and improve the well-being of our planet.
Our contributions as an innovative company are focused on a continuous search for improvements in processes and products in favor of sustainability and of the environment. Within the immensity of this field, in this article we will focus on three factors closely related to the environment: population growth, increased consumption of meat and fish, and climate change.
World population increase
Según fuentes de las Naciones Unidas, la población mundial está experimentando un gran crecimiento. Las estimaciones que se realizan hablan de 9.700 millones de personas en 2050 y un posible pico en el año 2100 de 11.000 millones de personas.
Increase of demand and consumption of food
Such an increase in the world population has a direct impact on the demand and need for food. The global consumption of meat and fish is growing steadily towards an average of more than 50 kg per capita in 2050. This fact is due in part to the greater presence of aquaculture and its production, but also to the overexploitation of Fish that according to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) are at risk due to their capture with an unsustainable biological intensity, which is alarming. Due to this continuous growth in consumption and the non-ecological or sustainable practices used to satisfy it, it is essential to develop new ways in the search for food resources.
Climate Change
In addition to these two factors, Climate Change appears as an irrefutable fact that will modify the way in which we relate to the world. Extreme conditions will be more common and the quality and health of the soil will be affected. Soil plays a fundamental role in achieving the goal of a climate-neutral European Union (EU) by 2050; Therefore, a key piece in the fight against climate change, as indicated in an artículo de Efe Agro.
In this article, it is also pointed out that soil degradation, in addition to erosion, desertification or pollution, is produced by unbalanced fertilization, the excessive use of groundwater for irrigation, the improper use of pesticides, the use of heavy machinery or overgrazing. As a consequence, one of the objectives of the European Union for 2030 is to reduce the use of chemical pesticides by 50% and the use of fertilizers by 20%.
We wanted to emphasize on these three key aspects due to their interrelation and the importance they have assumed in our search for innovation and sustainability both in our production processes and in our own products.
Tebrio with sustainability
At Tebrio, we are very aware that for a better future, we need to be more environmentally responsible and on the occasion of Earth Hour, we want to reinforce this idea.
“For us, sustainability is a must, our growth and activity would not be understood without this search for ecology and for helping the environment, while also helping our customers. With products such as our o:Frass, we help to improve soil conditions and thanks to the fact that it stimulates a great biological activity, it substantially increases the health and yield of crops. In parallel, our products are designed for food and are based on Tenebrio Molitor, an excellent source of protein for animals and, in the near future, for human consumption” Our CEO Adriana Casillas comments.
Obtaining our products and the processes carried out are more respectful with the environment, mainly due to fundamental aspects such as the following:
- We are highly efficient in food conversion.
- Our industry reduces greenhouse gases.
- Insects can feed on nutrients that use is not currently made of, turning them into high-quality proteins.
- Insects use much less water than traditional livestock.
- Insect farming does not require large areas of land.
- We have a very small carbon footprint.
- We do not generate any waste into the environment thanks to our circular economy model.
Last but not least, we want to encourage the population and the new generation to responsibly work side by side towards a more sustainable society.
Let’s be more sustainable!
