The use of Tenebrio molitor in animal feed has been approved by the European authorities. Tebrio markets its defatted powder and the fat extracted from the insect in its larval state to formulate compound feed for the pet market. These premium ingredients are especially designed to boost the optimum performance of animals during their growth stage. And due to their characteristics, they have a direct impact on improving the digestive and immune system of the animals that consume them.

This is the defatted powder extracted from the insect in its larval state. It is a natural, sustainable ingredient with a high nutritional value. It contains a protein concentration above 72%. Its ratio between digestible protein and brute protein by peptic digestion is greater than 90%. It has at least 7% fat and an ash percentage lower than 5%.

Insects represent an important opportunity to make animal feed more sustainable.

Currently, livestock consume 20% of the proteins we produce per year and is coming into direct competition with human consumption for water use, arable land and soil resources. To this we have to add the degradation and depletion of marine populations, which are a vital food source.

A rapid increase in protein production is necessary if we are to avoid an even greater problem. The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation) hopes that the use of insects may help close the gap, because we must bear in mind that a vertical insect farm, such as Tebrio’s, is 150% more productive per hectare than any other agricultural farm.
