TEBRIO\u2019S BEGINNINGS<\/h2>\n

After a thorough analysis of the market and sector requirements, Tebrio opted to produce Tenebrio molitor<\/em>, commonly known as the mealworm, a species of Coleoptera from which top quality defatted powder and oil, as well as biofertiliser and chitosan, are extracted.<\/p>\n

In 2015, it built the first approved insect production plant within the European Union for animal feed. And in 2019, it expanded its facilities and became the world\u2019s first biotechnology company to receive authorisation to manufacture insect-based organic fertilisers, simultaneously achieving the organic label to market them.<\/p>\n

One year later, with Criteria Caixa and the Centro de Desarrollo Tecnol\u00f3gico Industrial CDTI (Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology) becoming shareholders, Tebrio managed to strengthen its leadership in a sector that will be vital for the agri-food industry as a whole in coming decades. And it embarked on an internationalisation process that currently allows it to be present in the main global markets.<\/p>\n

Tebrio is the first Spanish insect processing company to be awarded the ISO-9001 certificate. It has its own technology that is patented in 150 countries and is undergoing an ambitious expansion project whose first step will be opening the world\u2019s largest insect farm in 2024.<\/p>\n

These facilities will continue to be in the province of Salamanca and will cover 80,000 square metres, enabling 100,000 tonnes of insect products to be marketed each year. This will give direct employment to over 250 people.<\/p>\n

And since 2022, it has joined the United Nations Global Compact to promote the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n
